Tony Hatton-Gore of WFiC introduced the first of these fixtures between Cyprus over 50 and Cyprus over 70 and England Kicking Cancer. Guests included Kyriacos Cleanthous of WFiC’s Stakeholder Committee, representing communities in Cyprus, and Antonia Grigoriou and Anna Konstantinou from PASYKAF. Thanks to Andreas Melenaou, proprietor of Fair Game Sports Centre; and referees Tony Watson, Kim Solly and Mark Hignett for facilitating the matches.
We are grateful that the England team, with manager John Cooper and Coach Marcus Renzl, are taking the time to visit Cyprus. They have a busy week with matches against Cyprus over 50s today and Wednesday and Cyprus over 70s tomorrow; as well as local clubs ENAD Panthers on Thursday and Paphos United on Friday.
Kyriacos Cleanthous welcomed the England Kicking Cancer team and referred to the role of WFiC in promoting walking football in all communities across Cyprus, the value of the initiative to develop Cyprus national teams and the support of the Cyprus Football Association for a new Cyprus wide league.
Antonia Grigoriou discussed the nature of PASYKAF’s work in supporting Cancer patients and survivors. WFIC is taking the opportunity to raise money for PASYKAF at all the fixtures today, Tuesday 28 April and Wednesday this week.
For the record, England Kicking Cancer won a hard fought match (20 mins each way) 2-0; after which the teams agreed to play another match (10 mins each way) in which the Cyprus Over 50s triumphed 1-0 (scorer Nik Peltekakis).
